****POEMS****

A little cup of friendship
With a bag of tea
When you drink this
Think of love from me.
source unknown
----------------------------------

I wish we could sit down together
And have a cup of tea
But since we can’t
When you have this one
I hope you’ll think of me.
source unknown
--------------------------------------

I cannot sit and chat with you,
the way I'd like to do.
So brew yourself a cup of tea,
I'll think of you, you think of me.
source unknown
---------------------------------------

When you’re feeling sad & blue
And have no clue what to do
Sit down and have a cup of tea
And a hug or two or maybe three
Feel those troubles melt away
And start you on a better day.
by Paulette, 1998~~TLC Creations.

A cup of tea to say thank you
For all the things you've done,
And wishes that the day will bring
You happiness and fun..
Happy Mother's (or whatever) Day

Tea that helps our head and heart.
Tea medicates most every part.
Tea rejuvenates the very old.
Tea warms the hands of those who're cold.

J. Jonker, Amsterdam, circa 1670

I would toss them in the Sea.
But since I can't, I'm sending you,
My favorite cup of tea.

Here's a gift for Mother's / Father's Day:
With this gift, I’m trying to say
Thanks for all you do for me,
Relax and have a cup of tea!

YOU DESERVE IT!

DRINKIN' FROM MY SAUCER

I've never made a fortune
And it's prob'ly too late now;
But I don't worry 'bout that much,
I'm happy anyhow!

And as I go along life's way
Reapin' better than I sowed.
I'm drinkin' from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed!

Haven't got a lot of riches,
And sometimes the going's tough;
But I've got loving ones around me,
And that makes me rich enough!

I thank God for His blessings
And the mercies He's bestowed.
I'm drinkin' from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed!

I 'member times when things went wrong,
My faith wore somewhat thin;
But all at once the dark clouds broke
And light peeped through again.

So, Lord, help me not to gripe
About tough rows I've hoed.
I'm drinkin' from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed!

If God gives me strength and courage
When the way grows steep and rough,
I'll not ask for other blessings;
I'm already blessed enough!

May I never be too busy
To help others bear their loads.
I'll keep drinkin' from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed!

There's nothing like a good cup of tea. The poems and pictures in this beautiful book
celebrate tea-time no matter what time of day or time of year.
From shopping for tea ("Which tea shall I buy today? English Breakfast? Earl Gray?")
to drinking tea ("There's a lot to be said/For a tea tray in bed"),

Poem by Gary Snyder:
"They Drink Tea"
There are those who love to get dirty
and fix things.
They drink coffee at dawn,
beer after work.
And those who stay clean,
just appreciate things,
At breakfast they have milk
and juice at night.

There are those who do both,
they drink tea.

Tea Party Today: Poems to Sip and Savor
Written by Eileen Spinelli; illustrated by Karen Dugan.
Honesdale, PA: Boyds Mills, 1998. ISBN 1-56397-637-4.
Recommended for ages 4 to 6.

Just as teapots come in all shapes, colors, and sizes, so do Eileen Spinelli's poems in celebration
of all the charms of teatime. Each is accompanied by one of Karen Dugan's vibrant, jewel-toned illustrations.
Traditional English rhymes, replete with shy maidens and tea cakes, appear alongside contemporary poems
about grouchy tea drinkers, seaside tea drinkers, and stormy-night tea drinkers.
Children will be invited to hum, whistle, or clap hands to a poem about the sounds of preparing for a tea party:
"Clank / Clink / Gurgles / Whips / Ticks / Stirs / Plunks / Pings / Kettle sings."
Teatime tips, displayed at the end of each poem, may inspire various response activities.
For example, after reading a poem about tea around the world, children are "tipped" to
research tea from another country; brew up the recipe provided for Minty Tea;
or consider which favorite book character they would invite to a tea party.
Adults will enjoy the memories of childhood this books is apt to evoke.
Spinelli, who has received a Christopher Award and a Magazine Merit Award
for fiction from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators,
begins the book with a personal note about the very first tea set she received at the tender age of four.
Another Review:
From Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature
The fun of hosting a tea party for real or imaginary friends is part of this collection of poems.
From shopping, to invitation preparation, getting oneself dressed to the tea party
itself are celebrated in verse. For those who may not be so ambitious
or inclined to entertain, "Tea for One" or "Cozy" may just hit the spot-for
"There's a lot to be said/For a tea tray in bed." Spinelli offers
her teatime tips at the bottom of each page.
Dugan's illustrations are soft and warm and will bring a smile just like sipping a delicious cup of tea.

A Perfect Cup of Tea
by Arthur Gray, ed. Pat Ross
Chronicle Books
ISBN#: 0-8118-0705-3

This new book is a reprint of the 1903 book, THE LITTLE TEA BOOK,
by NY journalist Arthur Gray. It is a small book but this updated edition
includes some wonderful prints of vintage tea labels, old china and silver patterns,
and line drawings. The book itself is an homage to tea and includes quotes, poems
info about tea and tea ceremonies around the world. It would make a nice gift
for another tea-lover. Here's a sample:
"Tea is certainly as much of a social drink as coffee, and more domestic,
for the reason that the teacup hours are the family hours.
As these are the hours when the sexes are thrown together,
and as most of the poetry and philosophy of tea drinking teem
with female virtues, vanities and whimsicalities, the inference is that,
without women, tea would be nothing; and without tea, women would be
stale, flat, and uninteresting.
With them it is a polite, purring, soft, gentle, kind,
sympathetic, delicious beverage."
And one of the quotes from the book:
"Tea tempers the spirits and harmonizes the mind, dispels lassitude
and relieves fatigue, awakens thought and prevents drowsiness,
lightens or refreshes the body, and clears the perceptive faculties."

Tea for Three

Come and site with me and we'll have tea
And talk of things that were and things that are to be
Of places we will go and things that we will see
Just the two of us
My dear daughter and me

A little wooden table
With chairs for two, not three
Yes, of course you may bring your bear
And place him on my knee.
No longer just the two of us
It's tea for three, I see
My dear daughter, the bedraggled bear and me

The years passed by and you grew up
Framed in memory, I still see
Cherub hands dimpled daintily, clutching ivory cup of tea
Twinkle laughter owns the moment
Baby faced & full of glee
Starshine dusted by the angels
Oh, God's precious gift to me!

If I live to be a hundred
I shall never richer be
Then when I shared your dazzling presence
And together we sipped tea.
My dear Daughter, the bedraggled bear, and Me!

Lee Scott, c. 1998

Tea: The Perfect Choice
". . a well deserved moment, to collect my thoughts,

From the poem "Some Tea" by Alan Farnham

"Tea tempers the spirit and harmonizes the mind,
dispels lassitude and relieves fatigue; awakens
thought and prevents drowsiness."
(Lu Yu, 5th Century Chinese Poet)

"If you are cold, tea will warm you.
If you are heated, it will cool you.
If you are depressed, it will cheer you.
If you are excited, it will calm you."

Tea For Two Song Lyrics
History
Tea for Two
A song published in 1924, music by Vincent Youmans (b. NYC 1898, d. Colorado, 1946), words by Irving Caesar (b. NYC 1895). From the musical comedy No No Nanette, which opened in Detroit in April, 1924. This is one of the most familiar and catchy melodies in the world, and has been extensively covered, especially by jazz performers.
Alec Wilder, in his American Popular Song: the Great Innovators , 1900-1950, says that "The phenomenal hit of "No, No, Nanette" was, of course, Tea for Two. Because of the abrupt key shift in the second section from A-flat major to C major, it is very surprising to me that the song became such a success. And not only that, but after the key change and at the end of the C-major section, the song is virtually wrenched back into A flat by means of a whole note, e flat, and its supporting chord, E-flat-dominant seventh. Irving Caesar has said that the opening section of the lyric was never intended to be more than a "dummy", one by means of which the lyricist is able to recall later on, while writing the true lyric, how the notes and accents fall. He also says that, in order to use the words he wanted in the second section, the C-major section, he persuaded Youmans to add notes which resulted in its being similar to, but not an exact imitation of, the first section. ... But for the rhythmic variance in the second section, the entire song is made of dotted quarter and eighth notes. This certainly ran the risk of monotony, yet the record stands: it was one of Youmans' biggest songs and it remains a standard forty-odd years later." (pp. 295-296)

TEA FOR TWO
Words by Irving Caesar, Music by Vincent Youmans. 1924

Picture you
Upon my knee
Just tea for two
And two for tea,
Just me for you
And you for me alone.

Nobody near us
To see us or hear us,
No friends or relations
On weekend vacations,
We won't have it known, dear,
That we own a telephone, dear.

Day will break
And you'll awake
And start to bake
A sugar cake
For me to take
For all the boys to see.

We will raise a family,
A boy for you,
A girl for me,
Can't you see
How happy we would be?

I'm A Little Teapot

I'm a little teapot, short and stout
Here is my handle (hand on hip), here is my spout (other arm out straight)
When I get all steamed up, hear me shout
Just tip me over and pour me out!
(as song ends, lean over and tip arm out like a spout)
